The Bubis distinguished two kinds of or marriages:
1.Ribalá Rè Rihólè: Marriage for mutual love.
2.Ribalá Rè Eötö: Marriage to the bride, retaining her chastity.
The Bubi people are a Bantu ethnic group of Central Africa who are indigenous to
Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.
This painting describes two souls who couldn’t be together because love was
forbidden in their culture.
